What is a trench coat?

A trench coat is usually a mid-length or double-breasted coat with deep pockets, straps on the shoulders, cuff straps around the wrists and a wide belt. A trench coat is popular for the more chilly months during autumn and spring because many of them have water repellent qualities. The trench coat was initially designed for soldiers to protect them against unpleasant weather while being a lightweight coat that optimized mobility and comfort. Traditionally trench coats were rather long to protect the wearer against the weather, however, modern trench coats can be quite short.

Is a trench coat and a rain coat the same thing?

A trench coat and a rain coat is not the same thing, but they can share a lot of the same qualities. A trench coat is usually made from heavy-duty cotton material, twill weaves, leather or poplin fabric which all have water resistant properties. A rain coat is most often made from polyester, nylon or vinyl and is therefore a more waterproof coat. Often a rain coat is more casual and shorter than the trench coat, which has become a fashionable item. A trench coat can be made from the same material as a rain coat and thereby become a waterproof trench coat.
